From Inspiration to Innovation - July at My Mind Rocks

Every creator has those projects that quietly live in the background.

The ones you keep coming back to. Testing. Tweaking. Throwing ideas away before building them back up again.

For me, one of those projects has been Final Destination.

It's an effect I've been developing for well over a year. Every time I thought it was finished, I'd find another small improvement or another way to make the experience stronger. Rather than waiting until it was finally released, I thought it would be interesting to bring MMR members along for part of that journey.

July gave me the perfect opportunity.

At the heart of Final Destination sits a wonderfully elegant principle created by my good friend, Gabriel Werlen. It's one of those ideas that immediately sparks your imagination. You don't simply learn it - you begin wondering what else it could achieve.

So it felt only right that our special guest for July was Gabriel himself.

Members first experienced the thinking behind Final Destination, seeing how a single principle can become the foundation for something entirely different through months of testing, refinement and performance. Then, just a few days later, they heard directly from the man who created that original idea.

Gabriel joined us for a fascinating evening that went far beyond methods and mechanics. Anyone familiar with his work will know he has a wonderfully inventive way of looking at problems, and that was exactly what members experienced.

Rather than simply teaching effects, Gabriel shared how he approaches creativity itself. How ideas evolve. How simple principles can be explored from unexpected angles. And why some of the strongest methods are often the simplest.

Those are the kinds of sessions I enjoy most.

Not because you leave with another routine.

Because you leave looking at your own material differently.

As always, the conversations continued throughout our Tuesday Jam Sessions and Sunday Sessions, where members discussed applications, shared their own thoughts and continued exploring the ideas introduced during the month.

Looking back, July felt like a celebration of creativity.

It reminded us that behind every polished routine is an idea. Behind every idea is a creator. And sometimes the most valuable thing you can learn isn't the effect itself, but the thinking that brought it to life.

That's exactly what My Mind Rocks is about.

Not just learning what works.

Learning why it works.

And, perhaps more importantly, discovering how to develop ideas of your own.

If you'd like to be part of those conversations and experience future months as they happen, we'd love to welcome you into My Mind Rocks.
